Astromechs

Have you ever wanted to fly, but were afraid of your old family ship breaking down? Are you trying to squeeze even more out of that brand new shiny YT? Astromechs are the droids that make the galaxy go around! IA is the only faction that is able to produce all the R-series astromechs, including the famous R2 model droid.

R1 Series
R1 Series
While capital ships were largely overlooked by droid producers, due to owners commonly insisting their crew worked better than "just another droid", the R1 series proved quite the opposite. Although expensive due to its complex stabilizer system to allow it to operate even when a ship lost pressure, the R1 helped with navigation, hyper-point plotting and could easily complement the crew of any large ship.

R2 Series
R2 Series
The R2 series is one of the greatest successes in the astromech field. Top of the line in its age, this model of droid has played a role in many a historical battle. The original marketing slogan was "There is nothing that this little guy can't do!" Originally released in the time before the Clone Wars, the R2 series rapidly caught on as a capable starship repair droid. Later, it was adapted for starfighter duties, allowing great increases in starfighter performance. A little more expensive than more recent models, the R2 still offers superior quality and adaptability, making it an asset for every self-respecting pilot in the galaxy.

R3 Series
R3 Series
The R3 design was the first astromech produced specifically for one group, the Empire. It was the first astromech to be released after the R2 series. In the gap between the launches of the R2 and R3, droid manufacturers continued updating and developing new technologies. They added these into their popular R2 series, but the Empire wanted a droid all to its own. The R3 was the answer, as it was programmed with several naval tactics, adding to the crews' ability to command. It also was a capable repair droid servicing the massive Star Destroyers that the Empire so relied upon. Unlike the R2, this little droid comes armed with a scout blaster, allowing it to help defend against enemy boarding operations and even useful in the disciplining of officers.

R4 Series
R4 Series
While the R3 was developed specifically for the Empire, there were those who wanted a simple little droid to help around the service hangar or help on the family YT-1300 transport, not fit into combat starfighters. The R4 was specifically designed with the average consumer in mind. The R4 was stripped of all but the most basic of tools and programming, allowing the user to program in what he or she wanted. In most cases, however, the R4 was a serious step back from the wonderful R2, and users often found the R4's extremely annoying. The R4 was really the first astromech flop. As a result, many R4's have been extensively modified by their owners.

R5 Series
R5 Series
The R5 was designed specifically for the Rebel Alliance starfighters. Although the R2 was capable enough for most pilots, Alliance Brass decided it was time to take advantage of everything the astromech can do to a starfighter. The R5 was a huge success for the Alliance, and many pilots bought their droids directly from the Alliance.

RX Pilot
RX Pilot
A piloting droid made exclusively for the Starspeeder 3000 series, the RX is a capable droid programmed to follow very specific coordinates between landing pads stored in its memory. Over time, its programming has been improved and it is now able to pilot any fighter or freighter and can even engage other ships in combat long enough to get to safety. Equipped with an advanced diplomacy chip, it is able to converse pleasantly with passengers, and is quite a capable pilot able to avoid sudden dangers that may appear. Although rather antiquated, the series still draws its share of enthusiasts who find its programming especially useful since it can take control of the ship and continue piloting the ship until it reaches its destination even when the pilot has left the ship and entered another vessel docked within it.s.

FA-4
FA-4
Designed a few decades before the fall of the Old Republic, the FA-4 pilot is not a typical astromech droid, but rather it is even able to pilot a ship autonomously; provided it has a little guidance. While the FA-4 fails most combat tests miserably, it is able to pilot any type of starship, from the smallest fighter to the largest capital ship, and follow the vessel's pre-programmed flight path until its destination is reached. The FA-4 can perform the basic functions of ship piloting, but is in no way as efficient as a seasoned pilot.
